In an era marked by escalating global conflicts and rising geopolitical tensions, the interpretation and application of the right to self-defence under international law has never been more urgent. The Department of Studies in Law, University of Mysore, is proud to announce an International Webinar on “The Right of Self-Defence under International Law”, scheduled for August 29, 2025, from 3 PM to 7 PM.

This event seeks to explore the evolving nature of self-defence in the context of contemporary armed conflicts and international legal norms. Participation is free of cost, and all attendees will receive e-certificates upon completion.

The department has earned recognition for fostering global academic diversity, with students from India and across countries such as Iran, Kenya, Tanzania, and Yemen.

About the Webinar

Recent global events — including the Russia–Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East, and tensions between Iran and Western states — have underscored the complex and contested nature of military force under international law. These events have resulted in humanitarian crises, environmental damage, population displacements, and international instability.

Against this backdrop, this webinar will offer a critical space to engage with the legal, ethical, and political dimensions of self-defence as framed by Article 51 of the UN Charter and evolving international jurisprudence. It aims to encourage reflection on how the right to self-defence can be responsibly exercised in today's conflict-ridden world.

Participants can expect in-depth discussions on topics including:

  • The Legal Foundations of the Right of Self-Defence under International Law
  • Self-Defence Against Non-State Actors and Asymmetric Threats
  • Pre-Emptive, Preventive, and Collective Self-Defence: Norms and Controversies
  • Humanitarian and Environmental Impacts of the Use of Force in Self-Defence
